If you are in a need of a fun spring craft for a rainy day, these umbrellas are a fun project for the whole family. You can make them in one color or make them as colorful as the rainbow.

Younger kids can make just the umbrella while older kids can opt for a more challenging version and add the little raindrops too. This version of umbrella craft is super kid friendly too as instead of using just the wire, we opted for pipe cleaners.

How to Make Paper Umbrellas (we’ve got a template too)

What you need:

  • color papers
  • 1 light blue cardstock
  • scissors
  • glue
  • yarn
  • 1 pipe cleaner
  • 1 toothpick (for applying glue)

Let’s start!

Step by Step Instructions

Print out the circles from the template provided – you can grab it at the end of this tutorial (use different color papers, whichever colors you like).

Cut the circles out. For one umbrella, you can go with 9 or 10 circles.

Making the Canopy

Start by folding one circle in half.

Step 1

Do this for all your circles.

Step 1-2

Then fold that piece in half too.

Step 1-1

The end piece should look like a pizza slice.

Step 1-3

Repeat this step with the rest of the circles.

Step 1-4

Open the pizza slice and apply some glue in between the corners. You can help yourself with a toothpick or similar.

Step 2

Then fold the piece again and press with your fingers until the glue dries or use clothespins to hold the pieces together while the glue dries.

Step 2-1

Repeat this step with the rest of the circles.

Step 2-2

Press it nicely.

Step 2-3

Put some glue on one end borderline …

Step 3

… then glue a pizza slice on.

Step 3-1

See the picture carefully and make sure you apply the glue on the right side so that we can open the umbrella afterwards.

Step 3-2

Repeat this step with the rest of the slices.

Then press with your finger until the glue is set.

Step 3-3

Put some glue on the borderline of the last pizza slice, …

Step 4

… then open the umbrella …

Step 4-1

… and connect the ends. Hold until the glue dries.

Step 4-2

Using your fingers, widen the spaces of each pizza slice.

Step 4-3

That way we make them all equal.

Step 5

Like this.

Step 5-1

Take the pipe cleaner and carefully put it through the hole.

Step 6

The Handle

Then make a hook…Step 6-1

… and cut the excess out.

Step 6-2

Your umbrella should look like this.

Step 6-3

The Raindrops

Print out the raindrop shapes from our template – we recommend using the light blue cardstock for this.

Cut the raindrop shapes out.

Take 9 or 10 raindrops, depending on how many circles you use, apply some glue on their tips and attach the yarn on (each yarn piece should be about 5 cm long).

Step 7-1

Apply some glue on each pizza slice and glue each of the yarns on the umbrella.

Step 7-2

Do this for all your raindrops.

Step 7-3

All done!
